Not all those who wander are lost... You've probably seen this on Instragram or facebook at some point. It's a quote from J. R. R. Tolkien from The Lord of the Rings. I was thinking about this the other day when I was on amazon. The recommendations. They're spot on. Not just from them, but Pinterest as well. They know what I like, based on what I've purchased and saved. The algorithms seem to know me better than I know myself. But what they don't know is what I don't know. What would I be interested in had I just "stumbled upon" it? It's what happens when you're in a bookstore and just wander into sections that you've never heard of? Remember walking into a record store and hearing something over the speakers for the first time? A million miles removed from the music that you would have normally chosen, something so far away from your usual tastes, that suddenly finds you unexpectedly falling in love. What happens to the surprises in life when it's not so curated. I bet that's beyond something we can actually measure.
